Embryo cryopreservation is conducted on embryos that have reached a day 5 stage of development. It allows a woman/couple to try to achieve a pregnancy at an ulterior time that will be convenient for her/them. The embryos must be of sufficient quality before cryopreservation to assure their survival after thawing. Typically, embryos that are cryopreserved are the remaining embryos after an IVF cycle.

The process of cryopreservation starts with exposing the embryos to special cryopreservatives that help to prevent the formation of ice crystals within the cells. The embryos are then placed in storage straws and sealed. Finally, embryos are subjected to a precise, controlled rate cooling and stored in liquid nitrogen at −196 °C. Once cryopreserved, embryos can be stored for many years, if necessary.

Thawing of embryos is much like freezing them, but in reverse. Embryos are first placed in a thawing solution that slowly warms and reintroduces water into the embryonic cells. Following this, the embryos are placed in controlled culture media where development is reinitiated.
